Geographically, it is defined by the Calavon river to the north and the Durance river to the south. The appellation achieved its AOC status in 1988.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWinemaking in the broader Rhône Valley dates back to Roman times. While the southern Rhône is generally known for its warmer conditions, the Luberon area experiences a predominantly Mediterranean climate that is uniquely influenced by cooler continental currents from the Alps and the Rhône Valley. Vineyards located at higher altitudes benefit from a significant temperature difference between day and night, which extends the ripening process of the grapes. The terroir is diverse, featuring clay and limestone soils in the mountainous sections, alongside sand and marl in the lower valleys.
