fronsac-chateau-de-la-riviere-1985-low-level
Fronsac Château de La Rivière 1985

This is a 1985 red wine from Château de La Rivière, bottled at the estate with an alcohol content of 12.7%, located in the Fronsac appellation of Bordeaux, France. Bordeaux, situated on the Atlantic coast, is the world's most famous wine region and has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. The right bank of the region is the traditional domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1985 vintage in this area achieved a score of 90 points and is characterized as soft and elegant.

Fronsac is positioned on the right bank of Bordeaux, west of Libourne, between the Isle and Dordogne rivers. The area, which covers seven communes, was granted AOC status in 1937 and encompasses approximately 770 hectares with around 100 producers. The vineyards are planted on hilly slopes around Tertre de Fronsac, featuring a soil composition of limestone, sandstone, and clay. Fronsac exclusively produces red wines, primarily based on Merlot, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of the plantings, supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small amount of Malbec. The area is recognized as a strong alternative to the neighboring Saint-Émilion and Pomerol appellations.

Château de La Rivière is the largest estate in Fronsac, boasting 65 hectares of vineyards and 100 hectares of total land. This remarkable scale stands out in an appellation otherwise dominated by smaller family farms. The château itself was restored in the 19th century by the renowned architect Viollet-le-Duc, known for his work on Notre Dame in Paris. Beneath the estate lies an eight-hectare network of underground limestone caves, providing a unique climatic infrastructure that distinguishes it from most other Bordeaux estates. This specific release has been recognized with several awards, including the Trophée International de la Qualité and the Grand Prix d'Honneur at the Concours International des Vins en Blayais Bourgeais, as well as at Vinexpo 1987 in Bordeaux. In December 2013, the estate was acquired by the Chinese Bolian group, led by Lam Kok, as part of a larger wave of international investments in the region.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0646/3478/1950/files/generated-1848_5e0d3a40-1af6-459b-ba0d-c41a48a32c54.jpg?v=1793354261
