porto-dalva-1968
Port Vintage C. Da Silva 1968

Porto Vintage C. Da Silva 1968 is a vintage port wine produced by C. Da Silva (Vinhos) S. A. R. L. in Portugal. This fortified wine originates from Porto, a protected designation of origin (DOC) in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. The vineyards are situated inland along the Douro River and its tributaries, sheltered from the humid Atlantic winds by the Marão mountain range.

The region experiences a continental climate with extreme temperature fluctuations, characterized by very hot, dry summers and cold winters. The landscape is defined by steep, terraced slopes with soil consisting primarily of schist. These harsh growing conditions force the vines to send their roots deep into the earth in search of water, resulting in low yields of highly concentrated indigenous Portuguese grapes.

The Porto appellation is exclusively dedicated to fortified wines, where the fermentation process is halted by the addition of grape spirit. Historically, the wine was transported from the valley down the river to the coastal cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, where it was traditionally aged in large port wine houses. Established as a demarcated wine region in 1756 by the Marquês de Pombal, the Douro Valley is one of the world's oldest formally regulated wine regions, and its historic terraces are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This specific 1968 vintage was historically distributed by Hulds Vinhandel and retailed by Poul E.S Vin- og Kaffelager, a specialty shop for wine, coffee, tea, and spirits.

C.
