Vigna della Sarmassa Barolo Riserva 1976
The 1976 Vigna della Sarmassa Barolo Riserva is a historic red wine crafted by Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo. This estate is widely recognized as the cradle of modern Barolo, situated in the very heart of the Barolo municipality. Its origins are deeply tied to the Falletti family, specifically Marquise Giulia Falletti Colbert and her husband Carlo Tancredi Falletti, who in the early 19th century transformed the local Nebbiolo from a sweet wine into a dry red. The appellation itself bears the name of these pioneering former owners. Following the end of the Falletti dynasty in 1864, the estate passed to the Opera Pia Barolo charity before being purchased by the Abbona family in 1929, who continue to run the winery today through their fifth and sixth generations.
The estate manages 110 hectares of land, including 45 hectares of their own vineyards, featuring prestigious parcels such as Cannubi, Coste di Rose, and Sarmassa. The grapes for this specific wine are sourced exclusively from the Vigna della Sarmassa vineyard, which is officially recorded on the municipal cadastral map as Sheet 9, parcels 149 to 157. Experts recognize this specific vineyard, alongside Cannubi, as one of the absolute finest positions within the Barolo municipality. This 1976 vintage was produced as a limited reserve edition consisting of exactly 12,400 bottles. In the historic cellars of the estate, five of Marquise Giulia's original oak barrels from the 1800s are remarkably still in use, serving as a living link to the birth of the appellation.
The wine is made entirely from Nebbiolo, an esteemed Italian grape variety known for providing great structure, which is predominantly cultivated in the Barolo and Barbaresco areas. The Barolo appellation is located in the Langhe hills southwest of Alba, within the broader Piedmont region in northwestern Italy. Piedmont, meaning "at the foot of the mountains," is framed by the Alps and is celebrated globally for its terroir-focused, family-run wineries and dramatic, steep hills. During autumn, these hills are frequently enveloped in a thick morning fog that protects the grapes and ensures a long, steady ripening process. The 1976 vintage in this area was characterized as warm and ripe, earning a score of 87 points. The region is also a renowned gastronomic center, famous for its exclusive white truffles from Alba.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
