Barolo Marchesi di Barolo 1983

This is a 1983 Barolo DOCG from the historic producer Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo. Known as the cradle of modern Barolo, the estate is deeply intertwined with the origins of the appellation itself. In the early 1800s, the Falletti family—specifically Marquise Giulia Falletti Colbert and her husband Carlo Tancredi Falletti—transformed the local Nebbiolo grape from a sweet wine into a dry wine, establishing the style that defines Barolo today. The 1983 vintage in this area received a score of 85 points; it is characterized as an uneven year overall, but one that yielded good results from top producers like this historic estate. The wine originates from the Barolo area within the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Piedmont, which translates to "at the foot of the mountain," is bordered by the Alps and is renowned for its dramatic, steep hills, particularly in the Langhe subregion located southwest of Alba. The vineyards here are often enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, which protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period. This terroir-focused region is celebrated for its small, passionate wineries and its deep connection to local gastronomy, including the famous white truffles of Alba. Often referred to as "the king of wines, the wine of kings"—a historic phrase proudly associated with the appellation—Barolo is exclusively crafted from the Nebbiolo grape.Nebbiolo is a premier Italian grape variety known for producing elegant wines with significant structural depth. It is the defining grape of the Piedmont region, most notably cultivated in the prestigious Barolo and Barbaresco areas.Following the end of the Falletti dynasty in 1864, the Marchesi di Barolo estate was transferred to a local charity before the Abbona family purchased the historic cellars in 1929. Today, the winery is managed by the fifth and sixth generations of the family: Ernesto, Anna, and Valentina Abbona. The estate manages 110 hectares of vineyards, 45 of which are entirely owned, including prestigious parcels such as 4.5 hectares in Cannubi, 6.5 hectares in Sarmassa, and Coste di Rose. A remarkable historical detail of the cellar is the continued use of five original oak barrels from the 1800s, commissioned by Marchesa Giulia, serving as a direct, living link to the birth of the Barolo appellation.

About the region

Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).

Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).

Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).

The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.

The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.

Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
