Barolo Riserva Marchesi di Barolo 1985 Bad label
This is a 1985 Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) Barolo Riserva from the renowned producer Marchesi di Barolo, located in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Piedmont, which translates to "at the foot of the mountain," is surrounded by the Alps and is globally recognized for its focus on terroir. The wine comes from the Barolo area, situated in the steep hills of the Langhe southwest of Alba. These hills are frequently enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, which protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period. The 1985 vintage in this area is described as classic and harmonious, achieving a score of 92 points. The label also designates this specific release as a "Grande Annata."
The wine is made exclusively from 100% Nebbiolo, a premier Italian grape variety deeply tied to the Barolo and Barbaresco areas. Nebbiolo is known for producing elegant wines with significant structural depth. Following the traditional production methods for a Riserva classification, this wine was aged in oak for a minimum of three years.
Marchesi di Barolo is widely considered the historical cradle of modern Barolo. The estate's origins are linked to the Falletti family, who in the early 19th century created the style of wine known today as Barolo. Marquise Giulia Falletti Colbert and her husband Carlo Tancredi Falletti were instrumental in transforming Nebbiolo from a sweet wine into a dry red wine, and the appellation itself is named after the estate's former owners. After the Falletti dynasty ended in 1864 without heirs, the estate was transferred to the Opera Pia Barolo charity. In 1929, the Abbona family purchased the cellars, and the estate is currently managed by the fifth and sixth generations, Ernesto, Anna, and Valentina Abbona.
Today, the estate manages 110 hectares of land, 45 of which are directly owned. Their portfolio includes some of the most prestigious parcels in the area, such as 4.5 hectares in Cannubi, 6.5 hectares in Sarmassa, and the Coste di Rose vineyard. As a rare historical detail, five of Marchesa Giulia's original oak barrels from the 19th century remain in active use in the cellar, serving as a direct link to the origins of the Barolo appellation.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
