Barolo Riserva Terre del Barolo 1981
This is the 1981 Barolo Riserva from Cantina Terre del Barolo, a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) Riserva red wine made entirely from the Nebbiolo grape. Founded in 1958 in Castiglione Falletto, the heart of the Barolo zone, Terre del Barolo is one of the appellation's largest cooperatives. It brings together around 300 members cultivating over 600 hectares across all eleven Barolo communes. The 1981 vintage in this area is characterized by fine acidity and structure.
The wine originates from Piedmont, a prestigious region in northwestern Italy whose name literally translates to "at the foot of the mountain." Surrounded by the Alps, the landscape is defined by dramatic, steep hills, particularly in the Langhe subregion southwest of Alba. Here, thick autumn morning fog often blankets the vineyards, protecting the grapes and ensuring a long, perfect ripening period. Barolo is widely recognized as one of Italy's great classic red wines, deeply connected to the local terroir and the region's renowned gastronomy, which includes Alba white truffles and hazelnuts.
Nebbiolo is an Italian top-tier grape variety known for producing elegant wines with significant structure, and it is the sole grape used in the production of Barolo. Because Terre del Barolo's members are spread across the entire appellation, the cooperative can draw upon a cross-section of the area's terroir mosaic. This geographic breadth allows them to combine the distinct characteristics of various communes, from the elegance of La Morra and the balance of Castiglione Falletto to the density of Monforte d'Alba and the structure of Serralunga.
Representing a cooperative model that historically provided access to valuable grapes from many small winegrowers united under one producer, the winery exclusively bottles its own production. By grouping only growers from the typical Barolo zone, Terre del Barolo ages the wine in the traditional manner to maintain its classic characteristics, offering a genuine expression of the appellation.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
