Beaujolais A. Maldant Frères 1966
This 1966 red wine is produced by A. Maldant Frères under the Appellation Contrôlée classification. The wine was bottled by the producer and historically imported by Lorenzo Bertolo. It is crafted entirely from the Gamay grape, a classic French variety predominantly cultivated in the Beaujolais and Loire regions.
The wine originates from Beaujolais, an extensive wine area located south of the main Burgundy region and north of Lyon, stretching 52 kilometers towards Mâcon. Covering approximately 15,000 hectares, the area is dedicated almost exclusively to the cultivation of Gamay. The vines are often grown using the traditional gobelet training system without wire trellising. The terroir is divided between the granite soils of Haut Beaujolais in the north, which houses ten distinct Crus, and the clay-limestone soils of Bas Beaujolais in the south.
Beaujolais is closely associated with the broader Burgundy region in eastern France. Historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the countless terroirs, Burgundy is renowned for its fine-meshed system of climats and limestone soils. The winemaking traditions in the Beaujolais area vary significantly depending on the vinification method, with techniques ranging from semi-carbonic maceration to destemmed vinification, which is often utilized in the northern parts of the region. This specific vintage has an alcohol content of 12.3 percent.
