Beaujolais Domaine de la Tassée d'Argent 2006
The 2006 Domaine de la Tassée d'Argent is a red wine produced under the Appellation Beaujolais Contrôlée in France. Bottled directly at the estate by proprietors Marie-Claire and Damien Mathon, this wine is crafted entirely from Gamay. As a classic French grape variety, Gamay is predominantly cultivated in Beaujolais and the Loire Valley.
Beaujolais is an extensive wine region located south of Burgundy and north of Lyon, stretching 52 kilometers down towards Mâcon. Covering over 15,000 hectares, the area is the true homeland of the Gamay grape, which has almost exclusively replaced the few remaining Pinot Noir vines since 2015. The terroir is diverse, featuring granite soils in the northern Haut Beaujolais and clay-limestone in the southern Bas Beaujolais. Viticulture here often relies on the traditional gobelet pruning method without wire trellising.
The winemaking styles in Beaujolais vary depending on the specific vinification methods used, ranging from semi-carbonic maceration to destemmed vinification in the north. While the region gained global recognition for its Beaujolais Nouveau tradition, it is also home to ten distinct cru villages in the northern part of the appellation.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
