Royal Beaujolais Thorin 1966
The Royal Beaujolais is a red wine produced by Thorin, originating from the 1966 vintage. Classified under the Appellation Beaujolais Contrôlée, this French wine has an alcohol content of 11.5% and was imported to Italy by Orsini in Turin. The label of this specific release features a unique historical detail, listing a series of notable battles spanning from the late 17th to the late 18th century, including La Marsaille in 1693, Dettingen in 1743, and Yorktown in 1781.
This wine is made from Gamay, a French grape variety that is predominantly cultivated in the Beaujolais and Loire areas. Beaujolais is an extensive wine region located south of Burgundy and north of Lyon, stretching 52 kilometers down towards Mâcon. Covering approximately 15,000 hectares, the area is dedicated almost entirely to the production of Gamay. The vines are cultivated on granite soils in the northern Haut Beaujolais and on clay-limestone in the southern Bas Beaujolais, often utilizing the traditional gobelet pruning method without wire trellising. The region's winemaking styles vary depending on the vinification techniques applied, ranging from semi-carbonic maceration to destemmed vinification in the north, an area that also encompasses ten distinct Crus.
While Beaujolais has its own distinct identity, it is situated within the broader context of the Burgundy region in eastern France. The viticultural landscape of Burgundy was historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the area's countless terroirs. Known for its fine-meshed system of climats and limestone soils, the region stretches from Chablis in the north down to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south.
