Valtuille de Abajo Peique 2007
The Valtuille de Abajo Peique 2007 is a Spanish red wine produced by Bodegas Peique, S.L. This wine originates from the Bierzo region, specifically from the area of Valtuille de Abajo, and holds a Denominación de Origen classification.
Crafted entirely from 100% Mencía grapes, the wine is made using fruit sourced from a careful selection of the estate's own vines, originally planted by the family's grandfather, Ramon Valle, alongside grapes from controlled vineyards within Valtuille de Abajo. The vines used for this production are 50 years old, reflecting a deep-rooted viticultural heritage.
The winemaking process combines inherited traditions with modern enological practices. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for two months on its fine lees. For the 2007 vintage, Bodegas Peique produced a total of 200,000 bottles, with the final wine bottled at 14% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Bierzo
Bierzo is a Spanish wine region located in the northwestern part of the province of León in Castilla y León, close to the border with Galicia. Geographically, the area is shaped as a tectonic depression around the river Sil and is surrounded by mountain ranges such as the Cantabrian Mountains. The region is typically divided into two zones: Alto Bierzo, which consists of mountainous areas with terraced vineyards, and Bajo Bierzo, which is made up of the wider, flatter valley floor. The soil varies from slate and granite in the mountains to clay and silt in the valleys.
The climate in Bierzo forms a transition zone between the humid, Atlantic climate in Galicia and the dry, continental climate on the Castilian plateau. The mountains protect the vineyards from the strongest Atlantic winds, which creates a mild microclimate with sufficient rainfall and moderate temperatures. This provides stable conditions for viticulture, as the area avoids the most extreme frosts that otherwise characterize central Spain.
The wine tradition in Bierzo can be traced back more than two thousand years to the Roman era, when the first vines were planted. In the Middle Ages, Cistercian monks were responsible for a significant expansion of wine production in connection with the building of monasteries along the pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago. The region received its official Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1989. Today, Bierzo is particularly known for its many old vines and traditionally has a strong focus on the local red grape variety Mencía as well as the white varieties Godello and Doña Blanca.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
