Bordeaux 1989 - Tasting box
Bordeaux 1989 – three terroirs, one great vintage
Experience Bordeaux from three different angles – but with exactly the same vintage as the starting point.
This tasting case brings together three red wines from 1989 from three different parts of Bordeaux. This provides a rare opportunity to compare how geography, grape composition, and local traditions are expressed when the vintage is the same.
From Côtes de Francs via Saint-Émilion to Pauillac, the tasting moves through three different Bordeaux terroirs and more than 35 years of development in bottle.
The case contains:
Château Francs la Comtesse 1989 – Côtes de Francs
The tasting begins on Bordeaux’s right bank. Côtes de Francs is a lesser-known area than its neighbors Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, but is built on many of the same classic Bordeaux traditions.
After more than three decades in bottle, here you get a mature expression of Bordeaux with developed notes of dark berries, spices, leather, and earthy nuances.
Château Fonroque 1989 – Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé
The next stop is Saint-Émilion and Château Fonroque.
Here we move into one of Bordeaux’s most famous areas on the right bank. Saint-Émilion is particularly associated with Merlot and Cabernet Franc and therefore provides an exciting point of contrast to the case’s Pauillac wine.
The 1989 vintage has now had more than 35 years to develop and shows the mature, complex side of classic Saint-Émilion.
Haut-Bages Averous 1989 – Pauillac
The tasting concludes on Bordeaux’s left bank in Pauillac.
Pauillac is home to some of the world’s most famous Bordeaux wines and is particularly associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, structure, and long life. Haut-Bages Averous therefore provides a distinctly different perspective on the same vintage than the wines from the right bank.
Expect a classic mature Bordeaux expression with dark fruit, cedar, spices, leather, and the tertiary nuances that develop through decades of bottle aging.
One vintage – three different sides of Bordeaux
What makes this case special is that the vintage is kept constant.
All three wines are from 1989, so the differences in the glass can be experienced to a greater extent through area, terroir, grape composition, and producer.
Start in Côtes de Francs, continue to Saint-Émilion, and finish in Pauillac – and experience how differently Bordeaux can express itself within the same vintage.
An ideal tasting case for the Bordeaux enthusiast, for a wine tasting with friends, or for anyone who wants to experience historic Bordeaux across the region’s different terroirs.
