Bordeaux, situated by the Atlantic coast, is the world's most famous wine region and has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. Bordeaux Côtes de Francs, officially known as Francs Côtes de Bordeaux since 2009, is one of the smallest appellations in the region. It is located in the northeastern tip of Bordeaux, between Saint-Émilion and the Dordogne border, covering the communes of Francs, Saint-Cibard, and Tayac. Historically, wines from these three communes were sold as Saint-Émilion until the practice was banned in the 1920s. The area was largely forgotten until it was rediscovered decades later by leading Bordeaux winegrowers, eventually receiving its own Appellation Contrôlée in 1976. The local climate is slightly more continental than the rest of Bordeaux, featuring warmer summers and colder winters.
The Château Francs la Comtesse estate encompasses 16 hectares in the commune of Francs. The vineyards consist of clay and limestone soils with excellent drainage, providing ideal conditions for the dominant grape. The wine is crafted from a blend of 75% Merlot, with the remainder made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Merlot is a classic blue grape widely cultivated in Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are also globally recognized blue grapes, frequently grown in prominent wine regions such as Bordeaux, Tuscany, and the Loire Valley, completing this traditional blend.
