Produced by G. Machard and bottled directly at the estate, Château Francs la Comtesse is a French red wine from the renowned Bordeaux region. The 1989 vintage achieved a score of 96 points and is described as full-bodied and concentrated.
Bordeaux, situated by the Atlantic coast, is a historically significant wine region that has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. This specific wine originates from Bordeaux Côtes de Francs, a small area consisting of just three wine communes—Francs, Saint-Cibard, and Tayac—located east of Lussac-Saint-Émilion and north of Côtes de Castillon. Originally, wines from this district were sold under the Saint-Émilion name until the practice was prohibited in the 1920s. After a period of obscurity, the area was rediscovered by leading Bordeaux winegrowers and granted its own Appellation Contrôlée in 1976. Today, it is officially known as Francs Côtes de Bordeaux and stands as one of the smallest appellations in the region.
The climate in this easternmost part of the regional Côtes de Bordeaux appellations is slightly more continental than the rest of Bordeaux due to its distance from the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in warmer summers and colder winters. The Château Francs la Comtesse estate covers 16 hectares within the commune of Francs itself. Here, the well-draining soils consist primarily of clay and limestone, creating optimal conditions for the cultivation of the right bank's traditional grape varieties.
The estate's vineyards are planted with 75% Merlot, a classic blue grape frequently grown in Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy. The remainder of the blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most famous blue grapes found in Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany, alongside Cabernet Franc, another classic variety typically cultivated in the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and California.

Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.

Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
