Bordeaux Supérieur Château Le Grand Verdus 1999
The 1999 Château Le Grand Verdus is a French red wine produced by S.C.E.A Ph. et A. Le Grix de la Salle. Bottled directly at the estate, this wine originates from the world-renowned Bordeaux region, situated along the Atlantic coast. Bordeaux has a rich history of exporting wine dating back to the Middle Ages and remains famous for its historic 1855 classification, which continues to rank the area's leading châteaux.
This release holds the Appellation Bordeaux Supérieur Controlée status. Established as a regional AOC in 1943, Bordeaux Supérieur covers the entire Bordeaux region but enforces stricter production regulations than the basic Bordeaux appellation. These requirements include lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, the use of older vines, denser planting, and a mandatory aging period of at least nine months. The appellation spans approximately 12,400 hectares across the region.
In Bordeaux, the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary is traditionally dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon grown on gravel soils, while the Right Bank is the primary domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Red wines from the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation are primarily crafted from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, often supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and occasionally Carmenère. The 1999 vintage achieved a score of 88 points and is described as elegant and ready to drink. Additionally, this specific wine was awarded a Bronze Medal at the Concours Général Agricole in Paris in 2001.
