Bordeaux Supérieur Château Moulin Rouge 1988
Chateau Moulin Rouge is a small winery situated in Côtes de Castillon in the northeastern part of the Bordeaux district, with vineyards located at the foot of the St. Emilion hills. The estate is part of the renowned Bordeaux region on the Atlantic coast, an area that has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages and remains globally recognized for its historic 1855 classification.
This 1988 vintage comes from the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, a regional AOC established in 1943 that covers the entire Bordeaux area. The 1988 vintage in this region achieved a score of 91 points and is described as structured and powerful. Positioned a step above the basic Bordeaux AOC, Bordeaux Supérieur enforces stricter production regulations across its 12,400 hectares. These requirements include lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, older vines, denser planting, and a mandatory minimum of nine months of aging.
The vineyards at Chateau Moulin Rouge are planted with approximately two-thirds Merlot and one-third Cabernet Franc. Merlot is a classic blue grape widely cultivated in Bordeaux, as well as in California, Washington, and Northern Italy. It is complemented here by Cabernet Franc, another classic blue grape frequently found in Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, and California. On the right bank of the Gironde estuary, where this estate is located, these two grape varieties traditionally dominate the plantings.
This red wine was imported and bottled by the Danish purveyor to the royal court, Vingaarden A/S in Odense. It holds the Appellation Bordeaux Supérieur Contrôlée classification and contains 12% alcohol with a residual sugar level of 2 g/l.
