Côtes de Castillon Château Haut Gallot 1985
The 1985 Château Haut Gallot is an estate-bottled red wine from the Bordeaux region in France, carrying the Appellation Bordeaux Supérieur Côtes de Castillon Contrôlée. Produced by Alain Aubert in Saint-Magne-de-Castillon, this release was selected as a jubilee wine for the distributor Vingstokken, following the success of the estate's 1982 vintage. The distinctive label features a motif painted by violinist and artist Marianne Rydell, who drew her inspiration from the 200th anniversary of Mozart's birth.
The wine originates from Côtes de Castillon, an appellation located in the eastern part of Bordeaux on the right bank of the Dordogne river, just east of Saint-Émilion. The area surrounds the town of Castillon-la-Bataille, famous as the site of the historic 1453 battle that ended the Hundred Years' War. Bordeaux itself is globally renowned for its historic wine production and elegant blends. In Côtes de Castillon, the climate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, though its distance from the sea makes it slightly warmer and drier than neighboring Saint-Émilion.
The vineyards in this area benefit from well-draining soils consisting primarily of limestone and clay on the higher slopes, with gravel and sand on the terraces and alluvial deposits near the river. These conditions are highly favorable for cultivating Merlot, which typically dominates the local production, supported by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. The 1985 vintage in this region achieved a score of 90 points and is characterized as soft and elegant, reflecting the classic right-bank Bordeaux tradition.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
