Pigeonnier de Seguin Bordeaux Supérieur Château de Seguin 1998
Pigeonnier de Seguin is a red wine produced by Château de Seguin, an estate located in Entre-Deux-Mers. This expansive area stretches between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. While historically recognized for its white wines, many estates here, including Seguin, now produce classic Bordeaux reds. The label features an illustration of "Le Pigeonnier," the estate's dovecote, created by artist J. Rose. This specific cuvée was first introduced in 1995 to mark the tenth anniversary of Chris-Wine A/S's ownership of the château, and the tradition continues with this 1998 release.
The wine holds the Appellation Bordeaux Supérieur Contrôlée classification. This regional AOC, established in 1943, covers the entire Bordeaux region and enforces stricter production rules than the basic Bordeaux AOC. These requirements include lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, older vines, denser planting, and a minimum of nine months of aging. Bordeaux itself is situated along the Atlantic coast and has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. The 1998 vintage in this region is described as rich and ripe, earning a score of 90 points.
Vinified in collaboration with the cellar master at Château de Seguin, the wine is crafted according to the traditional requirements of the area and bottled at 12% alcohol. It is a blend of two classic grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most recognized grapes, widely planted in Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. Merlot is also frequently grown in regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Bordeaux
Bordeaux on the Atlantic is the world's most famous wine region and has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. The legendary 1855 classification still ranks the area's leading châteaux. On the left bank of the Gironde, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates on gravel soils, while the right bank is the domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The region is known for elegant, age-worthy blends of great finesse.
