Pigeonnier de Seguin Bordeaux Supérieur Chris-Wine A/S 1998
The 1998 Pigeonnier de Seguin is a red wine produced by CHRIS-WINE A/S in the renowned Bordeaux region of France. Situated by the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux has a rich history of wine exportation dating back to the Middle Ages and remains globally recognized for its historic 1855 classification. This specific wine originates from the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, a regional AOC established in 1943 that spans the entire Bordeaux area. The 1998 vintage achieved a score of 90 points and is characterized as rich and ripe.
The Bordeaux Supérieur classification demands stricter production standards than the basic Bordeaux AOC, enforcing lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, older vines, denser planting, and at least nine months of aging across its approximately 12,400 hectares. The wine is named after the dovecote at Château de Seguin, a motif that also adorns the label. It was vinified in collaboration with the cellar master at Château de Seguin, strictly following the appellation's traditional requirements. The tradition of releasing this specially selected wine began in 1995 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Chris-Wine A/S's ownership of Château de Seguin, a practice continued with this 1998 release.
The wine is crafted from a blend of classic Bordeaux grapes, featuring Merlot and a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most recognized blue grapes, traditionally dominating the gravel soils of Bordeaux's left bank along the Gironde, while also being widely cultivated in regions like California, Washington, and Tuscany. Merlot, another classic blue grape, is the signature varietal of Bordeaux's right bank and is frequently planted in California, Washington, and Northern Italy.
