Bordeaux Superior Château de Seguin 1996
Bordeaux, situated on the Atlantic coast, is the world's most famous wine region and has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. The 1996 Château de Seguin originates from Bordeaux Supérieur, a regional AOC established in 1943 that covers the entire Bordeaux area. This appellation enforces stricter production rules than the basic Bordeaux AOC, requiring lower yields, higher minimum alcohol levels, older vines, denser planting, and at least nine months of aging. The 1996 vintage in this region is described as classic and structured, achieving a score of 94 points.
Château de Seguin is located in Entre-Deux-Mers, one of Bordeaux's largest wine areas, stretching between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The estate spans 200 hectares and is situated just 12 kilometers from the city of Bordeaux, featuring gravelly and stony soils. While Entre-Deux-Mers has historically been known for its white wines, many estates like Seguin now also produce red wines. The château represents a more accessible side of classic Bordeaux, located outside the prestigious Médoc and Saint-Émilion communes.
This red wine is crafted from equal parts Cabernet and Merlot. Cabernet serves as a collective term primarily for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which are thick-skinned grapes that ripen relatively late and form the backbone of the region's production. Merlot is a classic blue grape that is widely cultivated across Bordeaux. The 1996 vintage had a total production of 235 tonneaux, corresponding to 282,000 bottles. Following the harvest, the wine was aged in oak barrels in the château's cellars. The wine was recognized with a silver medal at the Concours Régional des Vins d'Aquitaine in 1997.
