Bourgogne La Chablisienne 1991
This is a 1991 Bourgogne Blanc from La Chablisienne, crafted entirely from Chardonnay under the Appellation Bourgogne Blanc Contrôlée. The 1991 vintage in the region was characterized by rainy and uneven weather conditions, resulting in few good bottles being produced. Chardonnay is one of the world's most famous green grapes, and Burgundy is widely recognized as one of its primary growing areas, alongside regions like Champagne, California, and Oregon.
Founded in 1923, La Chablisienne is one of Burgundy's largest and most central cooperatives. It brings together around 300 winegrowers from the Chablis area and is responsible for approximately 25% of the appellation's total wine production, making it a highly influential producer. A notable asset of the cooperative is its monopoly on Château Grenouilles, a 7.2-hectare Grand Cru vineyard situated in the heart of the seven Grand Cru hills of Chablis. Being the sole producer from this specific parcel is a rarity among Chablis Grand Crus, which are typically divided among multiple owners. The cooperative's extensive portfolio covers the entire spectrum of the area, from Petit Chablis and Chablis Village up to Premier Cru and Grand Cru. The wine is bottled at the property.
The overarching Bourgogne AOC, officially established in 1937, covers the entire Burgundy wine region in eastern and central France, stretching from the Yonne department in the north to the Rhône department in the south. The region's viticultural history was shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the countless terroirs, creating a finely meshed system of climats. The climate is predominantly continental, featuring cold winters, cool springs, and warm summers, though the large geographical spread creates noticeable climatic variations. The vineyards are dominated by a classic mixture of clay and limestone soils, providing the foundation for the region's production, which focuses almost exclusively on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
