Tavernelle Montalcino Banfi 1986
The 1986 Tavernelle Montalcino from Banfi is a Vino Rosso da Tavola produced in the iconic region of Tuscany. Specifically, it originates from Montalcino, a historic hill town situated about 40 kilometers south of Siena. The 1986 vintage in this area is characterized as fresh and firm, earning a score of 84 points. Montalcino is naturally bounded by the Ombrone, Asso, and Orcia rivers, with vineyards planted at varying altitudes between 120 and over 600 meters above sea level.
The area benefits from a Mediterranean climate that is generally warmer and drier than the northern Tuscan wine regions, while Mount Amiata to the south shields the vineyards from severe weather. The soils are highly varied, featuring limestone-rich marl known as galestro in the north, and a higher concentration of clay and sandstone in the lower, southern parts. While Tuscany is historically rooted in Sangiovese, the emergence of Super Tuscans in the 1970s paved the way for other varieties. This particular wine is crafted entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most recognized dark grapes for structured red wines, which is frequently cultivated in regions like Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany.
The experts at Banfi selected their most suitable rocky terrains in Montalcino to cultivate the Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine. Following the harvest, the winemaking process involves a long maceration period at a controlled temperature. The wine is subsequently aged in French oak barriques from the Tronçais forest for 12 months. Finally, it completes its maturation process by resting in the bottle for a minimum of an additional 12 months.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
