Cabernet Sauvignon Delle Venezie Cielo 2002
The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Delle Venezie is an Indicazione Geografica Tipica red wine produced by Cielo. Established in 1908, the Cielo brand represents four generations of winemaking history. The estate is part of the "Cielo e Terra" Group, an organization that oversees the entire production process to safeguard quality from the vineyards to the bottle. For this wine, the grapes were harvested and vinified by the Cantine dei Colli Berici in Lonigo.
The wine originates from Delle Venezie, a vast geographical area in northeastern Italy that encompasses the historical regions of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige. The landscape here is highly varied, stretching from the Alps and the Dolomites in the north down to the Adriatic coast and Lake Garda. This extensive topography provides a wide array of soil types, including moraine, limestone, clay, and alluvial deposits. The climate is equally diverse, featuring cool, alpine conditions with significant day-to-night temperature shifts in the mountainous north, while the southern areas near the coast and Lake Garda benefit from a more temperate, maritime influence.
Historically, Delle Venezie operated as an IGT, a classification that granted winemakers the freedom to craft wines using both local and international grape varieties. This 2002 vintage is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most recognized dark grapes used for structured red wines. While frequently associated with regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany, the diverse climatic conditions of Delle Venezie also create a suitable environment for cultivating this prominent variety.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Delle Venezie
Delle Venezie is a large wine region located in northeastern Italy. Geographically, the area covers the three historical regions collectively called "Tre Venezie": Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige. The landscape is highly varied and stretches from the Alps and the Dolomites in the north down to the Adriatic coast and Lake Garda. This large geographical spread provides a wide range of soil types, including moraine, limestone, clay and alluvial deposits.
The climate in Delle Venezie is diverse due to the region's size and topography. In the northern, mountainous areas, the climate is cool and alpine, which provides significant temperature differences between night and day. Further south, closer to the coast and around Lake Garda, the climate is more temperate and maritime influenced. These climatic variations create conditions for the cultivation of a wide range of different grape varieties across the zone.
The wine tradition in the area is long and characterized by a significant production. Historically, Delle Venezie functioned as an IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica), which gave the winegrowers in the three regions great freedom to produce wines from both local and international grape varieties, including red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 2017, Delle Venezie was elevated to a DOC with a primary focus on white wines, while the former IGT classification for the other wines was renamed to Trevenezie IGT. Older wines from the region therefore often bear the Delle Venezie name as an IGT designation for a wide selection of wine types.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
