Untereranzried, Ried Deutsche Weingärten, Südsteiermark, Domäne Müller 1995
This 1995 red wine is produced by Domäne Müller in the Südsteiermark area of Austria. Classified as a Südsteirischer Qualitätswein, it originates from the broader Steiermark region. The wine is estate-bottled (Erzeugerabfüllung) by the producer at Gut am Ottenberg and is crafted as a dry wine.
The fruit is sourced from two specific vineyards: Untereranzried, located in the wine-growing municipality of Ratsch, and Ried Deutsche Weingärten, situated in the municipality of Berghausen.
Made exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine highlights one of the world's most recognized dark grapes, traditionally utilized for producing structured red wines. While this variety is most frequently associated with prominent wine regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany, this bottling showcases its cultivation in the Austrian terroir. The wine has an alcohol content of 13%.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Steiermark
Steiermark is a prominent wine region located in southeastern Austria, bordering Slovenia. The area is known for its hilly landscape and its extremely steep vineyards, which often gives it the nickname Austria's Tuscany. The climate is uniquely shaped by a mixture of warm Mediterranean currents from the south, cool alpine winds from the north, and mild Pannonian influences from the east. This results in warm days and cool nights, which creates large temperature fluctuations during the growing season.
The region is officially divided into three DAC zones: Südsteiermark, Vulkanland Steiermark, and Weststeiermark. The soil varies significantly between these zones and ranges from calcareous marl, locally known as Opok, and sandstone in the south, to volcanic basalt and tuff in the eastern parts of Vulkanland. In Weststeiermark, which is the smallest and coolest of the zones, there is primarily gneiss and slate.
The wine tradition in Steiermark is strongly focused on white wine production, although red wine is also produced. International grape varieties play a main role in the region. Sauvignon Blanc is the area's absolute signature grape, especially in Südsteiermark. In addition, green varieties such as Welschriesling, Morillon, which is the local name for Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, and Gelber Muskateller are grown on a large scale. A particular specialty for the region is the rosé wine Schilcher, which is exclusively produced in Weststeiermark from the local blue grape variety Blauer Wildbacher, while classic red wine grapes are also grown on a smaller scale.
