Cabernet Sauvignon Leeuwin 1993
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Margaret River
Margaret River lies on the south-western tip of Western Australia between the Indian Ocean to the west and the Southern Ocean to the south and is one of Australia's most prestigious wine regions despite its relatively young history from the late 1960s. The area covers around 5,500 hectares of planted vineyard on a narrow peninsula that benefits from a strongly maritime climate.
The climate is distinctly Mediterranean with warm dry summers moderated by sea winds and mild winters, while the soils are old, deep gravelly clay over granite bedrock. The area is especially known for its Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon (often with the Houghton clone), structured Cabernet-Merlot blends and elegant Chardonnay, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blends and Shiraz. The style is typically concentrated and structured with precise fruit aromas; Cabernet shows currant, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, herbs and firm but rounded tannins, while Chardonnay has stone fruit, citrus, hazelnut, lees character and pronounced acidity. The area is known as home to some of Australia's finest Cabernet and Chardonnay wines.
