Cabernet Sauvignon Viña Progreso 2002
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Canelones
Canelones lies in southern Uruguay immediately north of the capital Montevideo and is the country's most important wine region, with over 60 percent of national wine production. The area is a relatively flat, coastal lowland with a strong Atlantic influence from the Río de la Plata, which provides cool breezes and moderated temperatures.
The climate is humid and maritime with even temperatures and significant rainfall, and the soils consist mainly of clay, limestone and sandy soils. Tannat is the region's flagship grape and produces wines with deep colour, firm tannins and a structured body, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and white varieties such as Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The style for Tannat includes ripe blackberry, plum, liquorice, spices, dark chocolate and a powerful but often rounded tannin. The area is known as home to the world's most distinctive Tannat wines and to Uruguay's wine culture, which traces back to Basque immigrants in the 1870s.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
