Cuvée Prestige Cahors Franck et Jacques Rigal 1990
The Cuvée Prestige Cahors from 1990 is a red wine produced by Franck et Jacques Rigal. The Rigal brothers lead a prominent wine house in the Cahors appellation, located in the Sud-Ouest region of France. This specific release is bottled in a 1500 ml format and holds the Appellation Cahors Contrôlée classification with an alcohol content of 12 percent.
Cahors is situated in the Lot valley, south of Périgord and approximately 150 kilometers east of Bordeaux. The broader Sud-Ouest region spans the area between Bordeaux, Dordogne, Toulouse, and the Pyrenees, encompassing a variety of climates and soils ranging from cool mountainous vineyards to warm river valleys. Cahors itself benefits from a mix of Atlantic and continental climatic influences, characterized by sunny summers and significant diurnal variation. The vines are primarily cultivated on two main terroirs: the alluvial terraces of the Lot valley and the higher limestone plateaus known as Les Causses, which sit at an elevation of over 250 meters. The area received its AOC status in 1971 and has a long-standing historical reputation; during the Middle Ages, the local production was highly celebrated at royal courts and became known as "le vin noir" or the black wine.
This wine is crafted from a blend of carefully selected Auxerrois and Merlot grapes. Cahors is recognized as the historical cradle of the Auxerrois grape, which is the local name for Malbec, and appellation rules dictate that it must constitute at least 70 percent of the blend. The addition of Merlot complements the local variety. Merlot is a classic blue grape that is widely cultivated in prominent wine regions across the world, including Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Sud-Ouest
Sud-Ouest lies in south-western France between Bordeaux, the Dordogne, Toulouse and the Pyrenees. The area comprises many smaller wine zones with great variation in climate, soil and grape varieties, from cool mountain-edge vineyards to warm valleys along the Garonne, Lot, Tarn and Dordogne rivers. Malbec, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Fer Servadou are important black grapes, while Colombard, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Mauzac and Len de l'El are used for white wine. The red wines range from fruity and spicy to dark, firm and tannic with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, pepper, herbs, liquorice and leather. The white wines can be fresh, aromatic or sweet with citrus, exotic fruit, honey and flowers. The area is known for local grapes, rustic reds, characterful whites and appellations such as Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac, Jurançon, Bergerac, Fronton and Irouléguy.
