The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Zaragoza
Zaragoza is a province located in the autonomous region of Aragon in northeastern Spain. Geographically, the area is characterized by the Ebro river valley and the transition to the Iberian System mountains, including the prominent Moncayo massif. The province contains three of Aragon's most important wine regions with official Denominación de Origen (DO) status: Campo de Borja, Cariñena and Calatayud.
The climate in Zaragoza is predominantly continental with Mediterranean influences. It is characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations between hot summers and cold winters, as well as significant differences between day and night temperatures. A crucial factor for viticulture is the "Cierzo" – a cold and dry northwest wind that blows through the vineyards and helps keep the vines free from diseases in the otherwise low-rainfall landscape.
The wine tradition in Zaragoza stretches back more than two millennia to Roman settlements such as Carae, present-day Cariñena. In the Middle Ages, production was systematized by Cistercian monks around monasteries like Veruela and Piedra. The region is particularly historically rooted in the cultivation of the Garnacha grape, which thrives in the high-altitude and stony soils. Many of the vineyards consist of old, low-yielding bush vines, which form the core of the province's wine production along with varieties such as Tempranillo, Cariñena and Macabeo.
