Canon Fronsac Château Mazeris 1987
Produced by Christian de Cournuaud, this 1987 red wine from Château Mazeris originates from the Canon Fronsac appellation. Classified as a Grand Vin de Bordeaux, it carries the Appellation Canon Fronsac Contrôlée designation and was bottled directly at the estate.
Canon Fronsac is a small AOC located on the right bank of Bordeaux in the Libournais district, situated immediately west of Pomerol and northwest of Saint-Émilion. The area rests on limestone hills around the village of Fronsac, forming the prestigious core of the broader Fronsac region. The local climate is characterized by Atlantic influences moderated by the waters of the Dordogne river, providing mild temperatures and significant humidity. The soils consist primarily of clay and limestone over an asteries limestone bedrock, offering excellent drainage.
Bordeaux is globally recognized for its historical significance, having exported wine since the Middle Ages, and its legendary 1855 classification still ranks the leading estates. While the left bank of the Gironde is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel soils, the right bank is traditionally the domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In Canon Fronsac, production is predominantly based on Merlot, typically supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and smaller amounts of Malbec. The area is known as an underrated source of structured Bordeaux red wines in a Pomerol style. The 1987 vintage from this region is characterized as light, reflecting the specific conditions of the year.
