Champagne Brut Réserve Chaudron & Fils NV
The Champagne Brut Réserve is a sparkling wine produced by Chaudron & Fils, with elaboration and bottling handled by George Goulet. It originates from Champagne, the historic and world-renowned wine region located in northeastern France, approximately 150 kilometers east of Paris. In 2015, the area's vineyards, wine houses, and historic cellars were recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The region sits at the northernmost limit for commercial viticulture in France, where a dual oceanic and continental climate ensures a slow maturation of the grapes. The defining terroir consists predominantly of chalk, limestone, and marl. This porous chalk subsoil acts as a vital water reservoir during dry periods while draining excess water and reflecting the sun's warmth back onto the vines. The area's winemaking heritage dates back to the 1600s, when Benedictine monks, including Dom Pérignon, began refining the local production techniques.
By law, only wines from this strictly defined area can bear the name Champagne. The production relies on the traditional method, known as méthode champenoise, where the secondary fermentation takes place entirely within the bottle. The region's sparkling wines are primarily based on three grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, which are cultivated across various subregions depending on the local microclimates. The area also operates under a historical classification system, ranking the most esteemed villages as Grand Cru or Premier Cru.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Champagne
Champagne in northern France gave its name to the world's most famous sparkling wine. As early as the 17th century, Benedictine monks such as Dom Pérignon refined the area's winemaking. Today the wine is made by bottle fermentation from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The cool, chalky subsoil gives high acidity and finesse, which form the foundation of champagne's elegance and long ageing.
