Châteauneuf du Pape Pierre Ponnelle 1973
The 1973 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Pierre Ponnelle originates from the renowned Rhône Valley in southeastern France, a region with a viticultural history dating back to Roman times. Located in the warmer southern part of the valley, just north of Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape stands as one of the country's most famous appellations. While the northern Rhône is characterized by steep slopes and Syrah production, the southern section is celebrated for its Grenache-based blends that culminate in this historic area. The wine holds an Appellation Controlée classification.
Maison Pierre Ponnelle was founded in 1875 in Beaune as a classic Burgundy merchant house. For nearly a century and a half, the house has operated as a négociant-éleveur, purchasing grapes and finished wines from various producers to bottle under its own trademark. Although historically rooted in Burgundy, the house's portfolio has included wines from other prominent French regions, such as this Rhône appellation. In 1989, the brand was acquired by Vincent Sauvestre and the Boisset group. Today, it operates under Boisset Family Estates, a modern corporate structure that maintains the historic Pierre Ponnelle name alongside several other traditional wine brands.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
