Brolio Chianti Classico Barone Ricasoli 1968
The 1968 Brolio Chianti Classico is a red wine produced by Casa Vinicola Barone Ricasoli. The Ricasoli family has owned the Brolio castle, situated above the Chianti hills, since 1141. This remarkable lineage makes Barone Ricasoli the oldest continuously operating winery in the world, having remained under the same family through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the unification of Italy, and two world wars. In 1872, Bettino Ricasoli, known as the 'Iron Baron' and a two-time Italian Prime Minister, formulated the classic Chianti recipe. His formula established Sangiovese as the backbone of the wine, forming the basis for the Denominazione di Origine Controllata rules up until 1984 and laying the foundation for modern Chianti Classico.
This wine originates from Tuscany, one of Italy's most iconic wine regions with viticultural roots dating back to the Etruscans. Specifically, it comes from Chianti Classico, the historical core area located between Florence and Siena. The 1968 vintage in this region is described as weak and uneven. The wine is made from Sangiovese, Italy's undisputed main grape, which is widely cultivated in areas such as Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and California. As one of Italy's most important Sangiovese appellations, Chianti Classico requires this defining grape to make up at least 80 percent of the blend.
Today, the estate is managed by Francesco Ricasoli, the 32nd baron in the family line, who oversees the 240-hectare property, making it the largest single estate in Chianti Classico. This particular 1968 release was bottled at the origin at Cantine di Brolio. It is presented in a large 1750-milliliter format, noted on the neck label as 'Una Misura Chiantigiana,' representing a traditional Chianti measure, and carries an alcohol content of 12 percent.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
