Chianti Classico Ruffino 1971
This is the 1971 Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico from Ruffino, a historic Tuscan winery founded in 1877 by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino. The estate is situated in Pontassieve, a small town east of Florence in the Arno river valley. The Riserva Ducale is the classic flagship of the house, a name that has existed since 1927. As noted on the bottle, the name originates from a high recognition contained in Patent No. 744 of December 31, 1890, by His Royal Highness the Duke of Aosta, which authorized the company to bear the badge of supplier to the ducal house.
The wine originates from Tuscany, one of Italy's most iconic wine regions with viticultural roots dating back to the Etruscans. More specifically, it is produced in Chianti Classico, the historic core area located between Florence and Siena, recognized by its Denominazione di Origine Controllata classification. The label specifies that the wine is produced in the zone of origin where the company maintains vast farms in Greve, Passo de' Pecorai, and San Polo in Chianti. The 1971 vintage is described as powerful, achieving a score of 93 points.
Sangiovese is the defining grape of this wine, serving as the undisputed main variety of Tuscany and the foundation for classics like Chianti Classico, where it must constitute at least 80 percent of the blend. It is a principal Italian grape variety, frequently cultivated in regions such as Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and California.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
