Chianti from the 1970s Tasting box
Chianti through the 70s – three historic wines from Tuscany
Experience Chianti as it looked more than 50 years ago.
This tasting case brings together three Chianti wines from 1971, 1973 and 1978 and offers a rare opportunity to taste your way through an entire decade in one of Italy’s most tradition-rich wine regions.
Three different producers. Three different vintages. One common thread: Tuscany and Sangiovese.
The case contains:
Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico Ruffino 1971
We begin with one of the historic names of Tuscany. Ruffino was founded in 1877, and Riserva Ducale has become one of the house’s best-known wines. The 1971 vintage has now had more than half a century in bottle and offers the opportunity to experience Chianti Classico in a completely different phase from the wines we normally encounter today.
Expect a fully mature wine experience, where fresh fruit has given way to more developed nuances of dried cherries, spices, leather, tobacco and forest floor.
Chianti Classico Brolio 1973 – Barone Ricasoli
Brolio and the Ricasoli family are closely connected with the history of Chianti. This bottle from 1973 takes us directly back to the classic Tuscan wine tradition – complete with the characteristic historic bottle style.
Here, you get another interpretation of Sangiovese and the opportunity to compare the wine directly with Ruffino from just two years earlier.
Chianti Classico Castelgreve 1978
The youngest wine in the case concludes the journey through the 1970s. Five years after Brolio and seven years after Ruffino, you get yet another perspective on how Chianti Classico develops through decades in bottle.
The mature Sangiovese character is expressed through notes of dried red fruits, spices, leather and earthy nuances.
Three bottles. One decade. More than 150 years of combined wine history.
What is interesting about this case is not just opening three old wines – but opening them together.
Taste 1971, 1973 and 1978 side by side and experience the differences between the vintages and producers, while Chianti Classico and Sangiovese tie the whole tasting together.
An obvious tasting case for an evening with other wine enthusiasts, for the Tuscany enthusiast, or for those who are curious about how classic Italian wine develops after more than 45 years in bottle.

How it handles
you your wine
Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
