Corbières Fils de Henri Ramel 1966
This 1966 red wine is produced by Fils de Henri Ramel, a wine house with roots dating back to its founding in 1871. The wine originates from Corbières, located in the expansive Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. At the time of this vintage, the wine was classified as a Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure (VDQS), a historical French quality designation. The bottle was selected and bottled by the producer and subsequently imported by COGIS in Milan, Italy.
Corbières is situated southwest of Narbonne, nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees. The area is characterized by a mountainous landscape and a highly diverse terroir, featuring soils composed of limestone, clay, schist, sandstone, and marl. The broader Languedoc-Roussillon region stretches along the Mediterranean coast from Nîmes and Montpellier to Perpignan, encompassing coastal vineyards, warm plains, and cooler mountain slopes.
The climate in this part of southern France is distinctly Mediterranean, providing hot, dry summers, mild winters, and over 300 days of sunshine annually. The vineyards are specifically influenced by two contrasting winds: the dry, northwesterly Tramontane and the humid, southeasterly Marin. Red wine production dominates the Corbières area, traditionally utilizing grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Cinsault, which thrive in the sunny and windy environment.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Languedoc-Roussillon
Languedoc-Roussillon lies in southern France along the Mediterranean, from Nîmes and Montpellier in the east to Perpignan and the Pyrenees in the south-west. The area is one of France's largest and most diverse wine regions, with coastal vineyards, warm plains, cooler mountain slopes and limestone-rich heights. The climate is sunny, warm and dry, often shaped by wind, which gives ripe grapes and healthy vineyards. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan are important black grapes, while Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Vermentino and Picpoul are used for white wine. The wines range from fresh whites and rosé to full-bodied, spicy reds with dark berries, herbs, liquorice, pepper and Mediterranean spices. The area is known for great variety, strong value for money and classic appellations such as Corbières, Minervois, Pic Saint-Loup, Faugères, Saint-Chinian, Fitou, Banyuls and Rivesaltes.
