Cornas Jean-Pierre Brotte 1983
This 1983 red wine is produced by Jean-Pierre Brotte under the Appellation Cornas Contrôlée. Bottled by Ets Jean-Pierre Brotte, a négociant and éleveur, the wine originates from the Rhône region in southeastern France, an area with a viticultural history dating back to Roman times.
The Rhône Valley is geographically divided into two distinct parts. While the warmer southern section is known for Grenache-based blends, the northern part is characterized by steep slopes where the Syrah grape thrives. Cornas is a small AOC located on the right bank of the Rhône in the northern part of the valley, situated south of Saint-Joseph and opposite the city of Valence. Granted AOC status in 1938, it covers approximately 145 hectares of planted vineyards, making it one of the smallest appellations in the northern Rhône.
The climate in Cornas is influenced by continental conditions with hot summers and cold winters. The steep, south-facing slopes provide maximum sun exposure, making it one of the warmest areas in the northern Rhône; the name Cornas translates to "scorched earth" in Celtic. The soils consist almost entirely of weathered granite with elements of gneiss and sand, often arranged in terraced walls that are difficult to cultivate with machinery. This specific terroir is dedicated entirely to the blue Syrah grape, which is the only permitted variety in the area. Unlike other northern appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, no white grapes are allowed in the production. Syrah is widely planted in the Rhône, as well as in regions across Australia, California, and Washington. Cornas is recognized as the home of historically significant Syrah wines, a reputation built by pioneer producers like Auguste Clape, Thierry Allemand, and Vincent Paris.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
