Clos du Chapeau Côte de Nuits Villages Domaine de l'Arlot 2003
The 2003 Clos du Chapeau is a red wine produced by Domaine de l'Arlot under the Appellation Côte de Nuits Villages Contrôlée in Burgundy, France. Domaine de l'Arlot is a prestigious Nuits-Saint-Georges estate that has been owned by AXA Millésimes, the wine branch of the French insurance group, since 1987. This places the domain within a strong portfolio that includes Château Pichon-Longueville Baron in Pauillac and Quinta do Noval in the Douro. The estate spans 15 hectares and features two highly sought-after 1er Cru monopolies, Clos de l'Arlot and Clos des Forêts Saint Georges, alongside parcels in Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru and Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots. The domain is directed by Christian Seely, and it has been cultivated biodynamically since 2003, later achieving organic certification in 2014.
The wine originates from the Côte de Nuits Villages, a regional AOC established in 1964 that encompasses five communes at the northern and southern ends of the Côte de Nuits. The area features a continental climate with limestone and clay soils of varying depths. Burgundy itself was historically shaped by medieval monks who mapped the countless terroirs, creating a fine-meshed system of climats. The 2003 vintage was characterized as a heatwave year, resulting in ripe and rich wines, and this specific vintage achieved a score of 85 points.
This wine is made from Pinot Noir, an elegant blue grape that is deeply rooted in Burgundy, though it is also frequently grown in regions like Champagne, Germany, Oregon, and California. In the Côte de Nuits Villages, Pinot Noir accounts for approximately 97 percent of the production. Sourced from the Clos du Chapeau vineyard, the wine is bottled at 14 percent alcohol. Following the practices of the estate, the wine is bottled unfiltered directly at the domain.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Burgundy
Burgundy in eastern France was shaped by medieval monks who mapped the area's countless terroirs. The region grows almost exclusively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has turned terroir into an art form with its finely meshed system of climats. From Chablis in the north to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south, the limestone soil yields some of the world's most sought-after and elegant wines.
