Côtes de Bordeaux Château de Haux 2010
Château de Haux is situated in the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation on the right bank of the Garonne River, just south of the city of Bordeaux. The estate holds a unique position in the classic wine landscape, as it has been owned by the Danish Jørgensen family since 1989. Across its 50 hectares, the château produces both red and white wines, with the red typically crafted as a traditional right-bank blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. This 2010 release is designated as a "Reserve des Proprietaires" and was bottled directly at the estate for its co-owners.
The Côtes de Bordeaux appellation functions as an overarching classification for several historical right-bank areas characterized by their hilly topography. These slopes, or "côtes," provide the vineyards with optimal south and southeast-facing sun exposure. The temperate maritime climate, regulated by the nearby rivers, creates an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The soils here are predominantly a mix of clay and limestone, which is particularly well-suited for Merlot, the dominant grape of the area. These favorable geographical conditions culminated beautifully in the 2010 growing season, which is recognized as a top vintage defined by power and precision, earning a score of 98 points.
Bordeaux itself is globally renowned for its long-standing winemaking history, having exported wines since the Middle Ages. While the left bank of the Gironde is famous for its gravel soils and Cabernet Sauvignon, the right bank remains the traditional domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The region is celebrated for producing elegant blended wines of great finesse, and Château de Haux represents a distinct piece of this heritage, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a classic Bordeaux with a direct Danish history spanning over three decades.
