Côtes du Luberon La Haute Brulière 1995
The 1995 Côtes du Luberon from La Haute Brulière is a French wine carrying the Appellation Côtes du Luberon Contrôlée classification. It is presented in a 750ml bottle with an alcohol content of 12.5% by volume.
The Côtes du Luberon appellation, which officially became known simply as Luberon AOC in 2009, is situated in the southeasternmost part of the Rhône region, right on the border with Provence. The area spans 36 communes within the Vaucluse department and lies inside the Luberon regional nature park. Geographically, it is defined by the Calavon river to the north and the Durance river to the south. The appellation achieved its AOC status in 1988.
Winemaking in the broader Rhône Valley dates back to Roman times. While the southern Rhône is generally known for its warmer conditions, the Luberon area experiences a predominantly Mediterranean climate that is uniquely influenced by cooler continental currents from the Alps and the Rhône Valley. Vineyards located at higher altitudes benefit from a significant temperature difference between day and night, which extends the ripening process of the grapes. The terroir is diverse, featuring clay and limestone soils in the mountainous sections, alongside sand and marl in the lower valleys. Although administratively part of the Rhône, the wine production in this area historically shares many characteristics with the neighboring Provence region.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
