Côtes du Rhône Thorin 1966
The 1966 Côtes du Rhône from Thorin is an Appellation Contrôlée wine originating from southeastern France. Founded in 1843, the Thorin estate produced this 11.5% ABV vintage, noting on the label that the fine wine was aged in their own cellars. This specific 720ml bottle was historically handled by the importer C.R.E.I.-ORSINI TORINO.
The Rhône Valley has a rich viticultural history that dates back to Roman times. The region is geographically divided into two distinct areas: the northern part, characterized by steep slopes where Syrah is predominantly grown, and the warmer southern half, which focuses on Grenache-based blends.
As France's second-largest AOC, a status it was granted in 1937, Côtes du Rhône is a vast regional appellation that covers the entire valley. It stretches across 171 communes in six departments, from Vienne in the north down to Avignon in the south. The terroir is highly diverse, featuring soils that range from northern granite to southern limestone, clay, and pebble gravel. While the appellation allows for white and rosé production, it is primarily dedicated to red wines crafted from a foundation of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, often supplemented by Cinsault, Carignan, and other permitted grape varieties.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
