Domus Aurea Clos Quebrada de Macul Macul 1996
The 1996 Domus Aurea is a red wine produced by Viña Quebrada de Macul S.A. in Chile. It represents the first proprietary wine made by the distinguished Chilean winemaker Ignacio Recabarren, and the bottle features original artwork by Benjamín Lira.
This single-vineyard wine originates from the Clos Quebrada de Macul vineyard, located in the Macul area within the Santiago region. The old vines are situated at the top of a gravelly slope that overlooks the historic wine-producing appellation of Macul. It is made exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most recognized dark grapes used for structured red wines. This variety is frequently cultivated in renowned regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany.
The 1996 growing season started with a cool spring, leading to an unusually late budbreak and flowering. The summer was warm and dry, followed by unseasonably low temperatures. Eventually, several weeks of mild, dry conditions allowed the grapes to reach optimum maturity. Selective picking commenced on April 20 under excellent harvest conditions. Following the harvest, the wine was bottled unfiltered, maintaining the natural characteristics of the production process.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Santiago
Santiago is Chile's capital and the historical center of the country's wine production. Although Santiago today is an enormous metropolis, the area around the city – and several historical enclaves within the city limits themselves – constitutes the heart of the renowned wine region Maipo Valley. Geographically, the area is located in the central part of the country, in a valley that is framed by the snow-capped Andes Mountains to the east and the coastal mountain range to the west.
The climate in and around Santiago is a distinct Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The decisive factor for viticulture is the proximity to the Andes Mountains. Cold air currents from the mountains flow down into the valley at night and create large temperature fluctuations between day and night. This prolongs the ripening period of the grapes and ensures an optimal balance in the harvest.
The wine tradition in the Santiago area stretches back to the mid-1800s, when wealthy Chileans began to import classic French vines and establish large country estates with vineyards just outside the city at the time. As the city expanded, several of these original vineyards, including in the districts of Macul and Peñalolén, have been surrounded by urban development. Despite the urbanization, these historical urban vineyards have survived and are today recognized for delivering some of Chile's most significant wines, especially from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
