Douro Soc. Vinhos Tuella Lda. 1984
Tuella Branco Seco is a Portuguese dry white wine produced by Soc. Vinhos Tuella Lda. Originating from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, the wine holds the Região Demarcada do Douro classification. This specific release was bottled in October 1984 and was originally imported for the Danish market by Irma Vin A/S.
The Douro Valley is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, officially established in 1756, and is today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is defined by its dramatic landscape, where steep, stone-built terraces rise hundreds of meters above the deep river gorge. The region experiences a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters, as it is sheltered from the cool, humid Atlantic winds by the Marão and Montemuro mountain ranges.
Viticulture in this rugged terrain relies heavily on the predominant schist soils. The schist retains heat and fractures easily, forcing the roots of the vines to delve as deep as 12 to 15 meters into the earth to reach essential moisture and nutrients during the dry summer months. While the Douro district is globally renowned as the home of Port wine, it has also established a formal classification for its unfortified table wines. This system grants these wines a guarantee seal, functioning similarly to the French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Douro
The Douro in northern Portugal is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, delimited as early as 1756. On dizzyingly steep schist terraces along the Douro river, the grapes that yield the famous Port wine ripen. Today, excellent dry red wines are also made from native grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. The wines are deep, concentrated and mineral.
