Enjoy Garnacha Mas Delmera 2002
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Priorat
Priorat lies in central Catalonia south-west of Barcelona around the extinct volcano Montsant and is a small, dramatic mountain region of around 1,700 hectares. The area is, together with Rioja, the only Spanish region with DOCa/DOQ status (Spain's highest quality classification, attained in 2009/2000).
The area is known for its unique llicorella soil, a mix of black slate and quartz that forces the vine roots down to 20 metres deep and gives the wines a pronounced minerality and concentration. The climate is warm and dry with large diurnal temperature swings. The wines are made mainly from old vines of Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan, known locally as Samsó), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The modern Priorat style was founded in 1989 by a group of pioneers (René Barbier, Álvaro Palacios and others) who rediscovered the area's potential. The reds are powerful, concentrated and age-worthy with ripe dark cherry, blackberry, plum, liquorice, mineral graphite, iron, spices and cocoa, along with a pronounced stony minerality. The area is known as one of the world's most dramatic and structured regions for Grenache/Garnacha.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
