Fleurie Georges Dubœuf 1996
The 1996 Fleurie from Georges Dubœuf originates from the Beaujolais region in France. Georges Dubœuf established his trading house in Romanèche-Thorins in 1964 and subsequently became the most influential individual in modern Beaujolais history. He played a pivotal role in making the region internationally visible, turning the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau into a global event. The house works with the entire spectrum of the region's wines, from generic appellations to the ten Cru villages. Following Georges Dubœuf's passing in 2020, the estate is now managed by his son, Franck Dubœuf.
This red wine is produced entirely from Gamay, a French grape variety that finds its primary homeland in Beaujolais, as well as in the Loire Valley. The region of Beaujolais, situated south of Burgundy, is characterized by its granite subsoil. The wine comes specifically from Fleurie, which is one of the ten Cru appellations of the area. Located on granite slopes north of Morgon, Fleurie is traditionally recognized for producing wines with a focus on finesse rather than sheer power. The wine holds the Appellation Fleurie Contrôlée classification and was produced and bottled in France with an alcohol volume of 13 percent.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
