The history of the wine

Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.

Portugal

Estremadura

About the region

Estremadura is a historic wine region in Portugal, stretching along the Atlantic coast north and west of the capital Lisbon. In 2009, the wine region officially changed its name to Lisboa to avoid confusion with the Spanish region Extremadura and to link the area more closely to the name of the capital. On older bottles produced before the name change, the origin will however still be indicated as Estremadura.

Geographically, the area is characterized by its long coastline and a hilly landscape. The climate is maritime and strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, which provides cool sea breezes and a moderating effect on the temperatures in the vineyards. Further inland, mountain ranges such as Serra de Montejunto act as a natural shelter against the strongest winds, which creates different microclimates and provides varied growing conditions across the region.

The wine tradition in Estremadura goes back more than two millennia and has roots with both the Phoenicians and the Romans. The area is Portugal's largest wine-producing region measured by volume and contains several historic sub-regions. Over time, the region has produced a wide range of wine types, including red, white, and fortified wines, and for a long period the area also played a central role as a supplier of grape spirit to the Portuguese port wine industry.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
