Oratorio Gigondas Caves des Papes 1999
The 1999 Oratorio Gigondas is a red wine crafted by Caves des Papes. The Oratorio cuvée is created in the producer's century-old cellars located in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Following the traditional methods of the cellar master, the wine is aged in foudres and demi-muids. This specific vintage was bottled unfiltered.
This wine originates from Gigondas, an important cru appellation situated at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Southern Rhône. The Rhône Valley in southeastern France has a rich viticultural history dating back to Roman times. While the northern part of the region is known for its steep slopes, the warmer southern section is celebrated for its classic blends. Gigondas shares structural similarities with Châteauneuf-du-Pape but is distinguished by a firmer, more mountainous profile.
The wine holds an Appellation Gigondas Contrôlée classification and is based on a traditional blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Grenache, the French name for Garnacha, is a prominent variety in the Rhône, Southern France, and California. It is complemented by Syrah, a blue grape also known as Shiraz, which is widely cultivated in the Rhône as well as in Australia and Washington. The addition of Mourvèdre, a classic Mediterranean grape found in the Rhône and Provence, completes the composition of this 1999 vintage.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
