Lamothe de Cussac Haut Médoc Cru Bourgeois 1999
Château Lamothe Bergeron presents the Lamothe de Cussac Haut Médoc Cru Bourgeois from the 1999 vintage. This red wine originates from Bordeaux, a world-renowned region by the Atlantic Ocean that has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages and is famous for its historic 1855 classification. Specifically, the wine comes from Haut-Médoc, the southern and highly prestigious part of the Médoc on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, an area that encompasses famous communes such as Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac, and Saint Estèphe. The 1999 vintage in this region achieved a score of 88 points and is described as elegant and ready to drink.
The grapes are cultivated on the "Lamothe de Cussac" plateau, a vineyard area that borders the renowned Saint-Julien appellation and benefits from perfect sun exposure on the left bank's characteristic gravel soils. Following the harvest, the wine undergoes a dedicated production process where it is aged for 16 to 21 months in oak barrels, utilizing 25 percent new oak each year prior to bottling. The wine's quality has been recognized with a Bronze Medal for the 1999 harvest and another Bronze Medal at the Concours des Grands Vins de France Macon in 2001.
The composition of this Cru Bourgeois is a classic left-bank blend dominated by 52 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, a prominent dark grape frequently grown in Bordeaux, as well as in California, Washington, and Tuscany. This is complemented by 34 percent Merlot and 14 percent Cabernet Franc. While Merlot is widely planted across Bordeaux and Northern Italy, Cabernet Franc is traditionally rooted in the Loire Valley, with both varieties also finding a significant presence in American wine regions.
