The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Río Negro
Río Negro lies in the northern part of Patagonia in Argentina and is South America's southernmost important wine region. The area follows the valley of the Río Negro river about 530 kilometres from the Andes towards the Atlantic, where irrigation from the river has created a green agricultural belt through the desert since British colonists dug drainage canals in the 1820s.
The vineyards extend over around 1,500-1,700 hectares in three valley sections: Alto Valle (west), Valle Medio and Valle Inferior. The climate is cool and dry with warm days, cold nights and large diurnal temperature swings, which, unlike the warmer Mendoza, gives elegant, fresh acid-driven wines with moderate alcohol levels. Pinot Noir is the region's flagship grape, but Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Riesling also thrive. The reds are supple and harmonious with cherry, raspberry, plum, violet, spices and firm tannins, while the whites are light, aromatic and acid-driven with citrus, peach, herbs and minerality. The area is known as Argentina's most European wine region and a source of elegant Patagonian Pinot Noir and Malbec with significant ageing potential.
