L'Atto Monte Vulture Cantine del Notaio 2007
L'Atto is a 2007 red wine produced by Cantine del Notaio, classified as an Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT). It is crafted exclusively from Aglianico, a traditional Southern Italian grape variety that is primarily cultivated in the regions of Campania and Basilicata.
The wine originates from Basilicata, which is one of Italy's most mountainous and least populated regions. Viticulture in this area is deeply connected to the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture. The vineyards are located in renowned districts on the mountain's volcanic tuff, where cultivation is carried out with a strong focus on respecting the natural life of the soil. This environment provides a unique terroir characterized by black, volcanic earth that is highly rich in potassium.
Following the initial winemaking process, the wine matures in small oak barrels. This maturation takes place underground in historic tuff caves that date back to the 1600s. The finished wine is bottled with an alcohol content of 14 percent.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Basilicata
This region is one of Italy's least populated and most mountainous. Wine-wise, it centers around one giant: the extinct volcano Monte Vulture. This is where you find the Aglianico grape in perhaps its most mineral and austere form, known as Aglianico del Vulture. The soil is black, volcanic and rich in potassium, which gives the wines an almost "smoky" character.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
