Margaux Great Growth Classified in 1855 Château d’Issan 1993
The 1993 Château d’Issan is a Grand Cru Classé red wine originating from the world-renowned Bordeaux region in France. Situated by the Atlantic Ocean, Bordeaux has a rich history of wine exportation dating back to the Middle Ages. The wine is produced in Margaux, a famous communal appellation located in the southern part of the Médoc. The left bank of the Gironde estuary, where Margaux is situated, is characterized by its gravel soils and is traditionally dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines from this appellation are typically blends led by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The 1993 vintage in this area is described as light and classic.
Château d'Issan boasts a profound historical heritage that stretches back to the Middle Ages. The estate is documented as early as 1152, the year its wine was famously served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England. This historic event linked parts of Southwest France to the English crown and laid the foundation for Bordeaux's English-speaking wine trade. The current Renaissance-style castle, built in 1644 and surrounded by an iconic moat, remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Margaux. In the legendary 1855 classification, which still ranks the leading estates of the region, Château d'Issan was awarded the prestigious title of 3ème Grand Cru Classé.
The estate's 30 hectares of vineyards are located directly within the Margaux village. The Cruse family acquired the château in 1945 and maintained full ownership until a partnership was formed in 2012 with the Lorenzetti family. Today, the estate is jointly owned by Jacky Lorenzetti and the Cruse family, and it is managed by Emmanuel Cruse alongside Jonathan Ducourt. This release was bottled directly at the estate, bearing the Appellation Margaux Contrôlée designation. The label proudly displays the château's historic motto, 'Regum Mensis Aris Que Deorum', reflecting its long-standing ambition and royal legacy.
